HANDY HINTS FOR PRIVATE REHOMING
There a few simple rules that need to apply to protect both parties AND especially the welfare of the greyhound:
/ The dog should already be desexed (to help with the wind down and to ensure no future breeding)
/ The dog needs to be properly wound down and removed from the day to day racing environment to chill it out.
/ The dog MUST have been exposed to small dogs (any other possible animal is a bonus)
/ There needs to be honest and open discussion between the race owner and the potential pet owner about the dogs personality and background (including injuries)
/ The new dog needs to be properly introduced to its new environment by the original owner and a property check undertaken at the same time
/ There needs to be on-going support for the new owner
/ The dog should NOT be officially signed over until the dog has settled and is comfortable in its new environment
/ If for some reason (and after exhausting all possibilities) the dog does not workout in its new environment, there should be agreement that the dog can be returned to its original owner.
